About Chessletics
Meet Roshan Gallage
Chessletics was founded by Roshan Gallage to bring structured, engaging chess education to students of all ages and skill levels — from complete beginners to competitive tournament players. Originally from Sri Lanka, Roshan has been a fixture of the Auckland chess community for many years, including as a Chess Power Accredited Professional Coach.
Roshan holds the FIDE Instructor title and National Arbiter certification, alongside a BSc in Production Engineering and a Master's in Manufacturing Systems Engineering. That engineering mindset shapes the teaching philosophy at Chessletics: chess as a way to sharpen logic, pattern recognition and mathematical thinking — while staying genuinely fun. He also arbiters community events around Auckland, such as the Hobby Chess Onsite Rapid Chess Tournaments in Hobsonville.
A competitive player as well as a coach, Roshan has twice placed first in the Sri Lankan National School Games, was named the country's Most Outstanding Chess Player in 1996, and helped his team to 6th place at the 2001 Grand Asian Chess Challenge in Malaysia. He's been involved with Chess Power and the Sarapu Cup for over 8 years. Of the many students he's coached, one school team of seven alone went on to produce four engineers, two doctors and a quantity surveyor.
"I really like how kids enjoy themselves when they beat me in chess games. I use this opportunity to teach them to understand the game of life using the game of chess."
